SOS Children’s Village

What is an SOS Children’s Village

An SOS Children’s Village is a program that provides a protective and caring family environment for children and young people who have lost parental care. Up to five children of different ages (often siblings) live together in a family home with one caregiver and supporting staff. Six to ten houses, similar in structure but different in layout and decoration, together make up an SOS Children’s Village. The Village also includes recreation spaces such as a playground, sports area, and multipurpose hall.

SOS Children’s Villages Methodology
The approach of SOS Children’s Villages focuses on the home as the central environment, providing a family-like setting that promotes the well-being and full development of the children.

The philosophy is based on:

  • A protective family environment where each child needs a stable caregiver and grows up naturally with siblings in a supportive village.

  • Strengthening social support networks for children and their families, working with communities to promote safe social networks.

  • The best interests of the child as the foundation for all actions and decisions.
  • Involving children and young people. Informing them and asking for their views about decisions that affect their lives, based on their development and readiness to assume rights and responsibilities.
