Our History

The establishment of SOS Children’s Villages in Greece is an initiative of Ms. Klontia Katsara, a friend and member of SOS Children’s Villages in France who came to Greece with a big dream and a specific goal: to create an SOS Children’s Village in our country, for children who could not grow up with their families for several reasons.

Supported by her friends who trusted her vision and became the founding members of the Association, and with perseverance in the purpose she wanted to serve, a persistent effort began, defying the reefs of procrastination and bureaucracy.

The press, and especially the magazine ‘’ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑ’’, talked about the idea of an SOS Children’s Village that would transform child protection. The efforts of all these people paid off and the Association “SOS Children’s Villages Greece” was founded at the end of 1975 as a non-profit charity.

The Founding Members of the Association were: Mrs. Claudia Katsara, Ioannis Vallis, Spyros Garzonis, Theofilos Sarikas, Panagiotis Chronopoulos, Haris Kladaki, Mrs. Semiramis Mavropoulou, Evangelos Terzopoulos, Vassilis Hatzipanos, Elli Eleadou, Mrs. Adamadia Marinopoulou, Georgios Lisikatos, Nikitas Tirakis, Aikaterini Filippou, Mrs. Marina Katsara, Mrs. Eleni Koutouzi, Mrs. Elisavet Koutouzi, Mrs. Aikaterini Papadrianou, Mrs. Foula Panagiotakou, Kalliopi Rapidi and Mrs. Theano Konstantinidis.

During the years of our operation we have received important distinctions from the Academy of Athens, the Hellenic Red Cross, the Public Benefit Foundation “A. ONASIS “, the Ministry of Health & Social Solidarity and many associations and organizations, for our work towards children who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care.
